Edmonton was one of the first cities in North America to have a curbside recycling program.
Since then, a number of innovative ideas and projects have been put into action, leading the city to become known for its waste management system.
“It’s always been a focus on diverting (waste) for sustainability,” said Jodi Tauber, waste management communications officer.
Current practices see 60 per cent of Edmonton’s waste diverted from landfill and once a new biofuels facility opens up in 2015, that number could grow to 90 per cent.

OTTAWA — Geographically, the continental divide roughly follows the spine of the Rockies, separating British Columbia from Alberta. Economically, that line will move over a few provinces during the next decade, to mark the division between the prosperous West and the struggling East.

According to the 2011 census data released on Wednesday by Statistics Canada, Edmonton is the fastest-growing major city in the country.
In the last five years, metro Edmonton’s population grew by 12.1 per cent — just a shade slower than metro Calgary, which grew by 12.6 per cent.
But the population of Edmonton proper grew by 11.2 per cent — just ahead of Calgary’s 10.9 per cent.
As of 2011, there were 812,201 people in Edmonton city proper, with 1.16 million in the greater Edmonton region. We’ve almost caught up with metro Calgary, which is now at 1.2 million. [continued...]
EDMONTON – Beaumont was the fastest growing community in metro Edmonton, adding another 4,323 people since 2006, a 48-per-cent increase.The City of Leduc was close behind with an impressive 43-per-cent growth rate
Spruce Grove came in third in the regional growth sweepstakes with 33 per cent while St. Albert, the biggest community after Edmonton, recorded the lowest — 6.4 per cent growth.
The Edmonton area grew by about 125,000 since 2006, with about 81,829 people moving to Edmonton, an 11-per-cent rate of growth. About one-third of the newcomers — 42,668 — settled in regional municipalities. [...continued]

The inventory of homes for sale is down about 6% from this time last year. At the end of last January there was a 6.8 month supply of homes on the market. At January 31st this year there was a 6 month supply, a slight improvement. However last month was very strong for new listings, with 2,441 homes coming onto the market, compared to 2,119 in Jan/11 and 2,143 in Jan/10.

The 2011 Census confirmed what most people already knew: Alberta’s population is growing at almost twice the national rate. Ontarians should rest assured of their dominant place in confederacy because even at current growth rates it would take well over 150 years before Alberta is the most populace province.
